APP SHORTCUTS
make shortcuts for the following applications:
kmess->ctrl-alt-m (messenger)
browser->ctrl-alt-i (internet)
notify->ctrl-alt-g (notify)
so whenever you change your preference for any one of those services, the shortcut will not change.
to make a shortcut, go over the application picture, right click, edit item....
system settings->keyboard and mouse->keyboard shortcuts->global shortcuts->maximize window = alt-f7, minimize window=alt-f6
configure panel->33px high, apply.
remove what you want from the panel.
SHORTCUTS
Alt-f1 = open the k menu.
fn-f7=activate mousepad.
ctrl-alt-f1 = enter system console. inside the console alt-f7 gets you back.
Alt-f12 = control mouse with keyboard.
Shift-F10 = mouse right click.
F6 = maximize window.
F7 = minimize window.
the two above can be set in "keyboard and mouse"->keyboard shortcuts->shortcut schemes.
KATE(text editor)
kate->settings->configure kate->open/save->unclick "backup local files".
this option makes kate always be making backups without telling, and in a local directory.
press f11 to see the line numbers.
Desktop appearance
right click on desktop, configure desktop->picture->totally new product.
right click on desktop, configure desktop, set screen saver to clock.
Open Office, math
sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-math
FLASH
go to terminal, (now ctrl-alt-t)
type: sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
it installs flash player. must restart your browser though.
system settings->window behaviour->moving->unclick "display content in moving windows" and "dipslay content in resizing windows"
VIM
install the full version of vim:
sudo apt-get install vim
otherwise there may be color highlighting problems.
And then copy the .vimrc to the home directory.
Projector/different monitor
plug in the monitor
maybe press ctrl-alt-f2
may need to restart the system
USB
When done using a usb stick u must click 'unmount safely'.
otherwise there may be problems next time you use it.
windows has stopped allowing this option, which means it leaves the drive corrupt.
the way around that is to turn off the comptuer when the usb in plugged in.
that way it unmounts.
Also, it is not safe to use the kde gui to copy folders between media, use the terminal,
cp from-to.
